As a shop owner, it is important to let your shoppers know exactly what it is you have to offer them. However, you need to make it as easy and painless as possible for them to find either what they need or want. We like to call this making your website User Friendly. The easier it is for them to navigated your website, increases your chances for sales. As a business owner, we love sales! Am I right?
If your current website/theme is already Mobile Friendly then you are already half way there to making your website User Friendly. So let’s go ahead and dive right on in and get started on the navigational aspect, assuming you have already established an online store or just starting out and have your theme, Woocommerce, and WordPress installed currently.
Let’s log into our WordPress Dashboard and go to Appearance » Menus. You will come to page that looks like this. Notice, to the left of the menu placement area it only says Pages, Posts, Custom Links, Categories, and Format. There is absolutely nothing about Product Categories, this would confuses those brand new using WordPress with no inkling as what to do.
However, today is your lucky day! We are going to show you how to retrieve that option. Let’s scroll to the top off our page. You will see a tab in the upper right hand corner titled Screen Options, go ahead and click on this tab. You will notice there are a ton of options with boxes. However, for right now we only want to check the box next to where it says Product Categories. You may now click on the Screen Options tab once again to have it collapse. If you scroll back down you will notice Product Categories are now an option on the left, right below format. However, we will want to create a new menu to display our product categories. Now the question you need to ask yourself is, do you want to display them depending on your theme in your primary navigation, secondary navigation, header navigation or your sidebar? Well, if you choose to add them to your navigation menu, it’s pretty self-explanatory from here. The hardest part for you was figuring out how to get the Product Categories to display. If you decide you would like to place them in the sidebar then let’s go ahead and continue.
Alright, we will need to being by creating a new Menu. To do this, look for the link next to the dropbox that says create a new menu and click on it. You will need to title your Menu. For this instance, we are going to name ours Party Supplies. You free to names yours something that suits your needs. We choose Party Supplies since our menu will be reflecting Party Supply categories.
Once you have named your menu, you are free to add categories from your Product Categories on the left. Yours should look similar more or less like this. Of Course, yours may have more or less than ours depending on your needs. Now remember to save your menu when finished!
Alright, now it’s time to add it to our sidebar. Let’s head on over to our widgets area by going to Appearance » Widgets. Let’s go ahead and expand our Primary Sidebar widget area by clicking on the arrow in the upper right hand corner.
Next you will need to locate the Custom Menu widget on the left hand side and drag it over to the Primary Sidebar widget area. We titled our widget the same as our menu, Party Supplies, then we choose Party Supplies from the Select Menu dropbox and clicked on save. That’s it! Please, keep in mind you are able to repeat this process as many times as needed to display other product categories in a orderly and organized fashion to meet your shop needs.
